McClure's Magazine - April 1897 and August 1898

Home > About Our Magazines > Miscellaneous Magazines > McClure's Magazine - April 1897 and August 1898

McClure's Magazine was founded in 1893 as a monthly, featuring fiction, serials, and nonfiction. It is credited as having "started the tradition of muckraking journalism" (i.e., investigative or reform journalism and exposés). It was founded by S.S. McClure and John Sanborn Phillips, and published many well known writers. A dispute with the writers in 1906 resulted in the magazine's eventual bankruptcy in 1911, whereupon it was sold to another publisher and re-issued as a women's magazine. It ceased publication in 1929. A number of issues are available on Archive.org. For more information, visit Wikipedia.
