Ernest William Hornung (7 June 1866 - 22 March 1921) is best known for his series of stories about the gentleman thief A.J. Raffles, also known as "The Amateur Cracksman." One wonders if Hornung, whose brother-in-law was Arthur Conan Doyle, deliberately set out to create a criminal who could rival Doyle's great detective! Hornung wrote many other books and stories; Wikipedia tells us that "Hornung's stories dealt with a wider range of themes than crime: he examined scientific and medical developments, guilt, class and the unequal role played by women in society. Two threads that run through a sizeable proportion of his books are Australia and cricket; the latter was also a lifelong passion." Here you'll find some of the tales of Australia (including the Stingaree series), but sadly, no Raffles stories!
