Worried about what happens to your personal data when you visit VictorianVoices.net? Don't be! Here's what we "collect" and what we do with it.
First, there actually is no "we." There's "I," Moira Allen. I'm the only person who works with this site. There's no big company or corporation. The goal of this site is to give information, not get it. Still, we get some data whether we want it or not, so let's look at...
1. Visitor Statistics
This site does not use cookies. However, visitor statistics are tracked by a variety of programs, and they do. Some of those programs, like Awstats, are incorporated into the host server, and I have no control over them.
The cookies used by these programs do not provide any personal information about visitors. From Awstats, I can determine how many unique visitors come to the site every month and how many pages are visited. Awstats also provides some additional info, such as statistics on visitors from different countries, pages visited, keywords used in searching for the site, etc., but again, no personal information is gathered on individuals.
2. E-mails
If you send me a personal e-mail (such as a thank-you or a request for information), obviously I will receive whatever personal information you have chosen to send. I treat e-mail correspondence in the same manner as letters sent by mail. Personal e-mails are archived offline in perpetuity. I do not collect or maintain a list of e-mail addresses from personal e-mails. No personal information from voluntary e-mails is ever shared, sold, made public, etc.
I reserve the following use for personal e-mails:
- The right to contact correspondents in the unlikely event that I launch a newsletter or blog relating to the topic of this site. In such an event, correspondents will have the right to opt out of any future contacts or mailings.
If you send me a personal e-mail, rest assured that I will never use it to spam you.
3. Our Newsletter
Our newsletter is currently on hiatus. In the past, it has been used to notify members of the latest issues of our free e-magazines (Victorian Times and Victorian Creative). Since those magazines are no longer being produced, the newsletter is no longer active. I have retained the membership list in case we launch another magazine or blog in the future.
The mailing list for this newsletter is maintained by SimpleLists (https://www.simplelists.com/); please visit their website to learn about their privacy policy.
This is an opt-in list, and members are able to opt-out at any time. As the owner of the list, I have access to the names and e-mails that are on the list. At present I am not archiving that list on my own system, though I reserve the right to do so.
In the unlikely event that I ever sell or otherwise transfer the site, and the subsequent owner has an interest in maintaining a newsletter, list members will be given the option of remaining on the list or opting out before the list is transferred to a new owner. Otherwise, this list will never be transferred, sold or made public.
4. Book, Gift and Clip Art Sales
A variety of items are offered for sale through or from this site, including books, "gift items" and clip art. Sales of any kind are treated as business transactions, and any information necessary for business and tax purposes is retained in perpetuity. This information is kept private, archived offline, and will never be sold, shared, or made public. Here's how information is gathered and processed for different types of sales.
- Books
- At present, all our books (including Victorian Times Quarterly magazine compilations) are sold through Amazon. Several of our books are also available on Kindle. This means you aren't purchasing directly from us and we never see your information.
- Gift Items
- We offer a growing selection of Victorian-themed greeting cards, notebooks, mugs, etc. These are sold directly through Zazzle.com, so, again, you aren't purchasing directly from us and we never see your information.
- Clip Art
- We offer a huge collection of Victorian and Vintage Clip Art, including prints and full color ephemera. These collections are sold (and downloaded) directly from the website. Payment is accepted through PayPal and your order is processed through Softseller.com. This generally means that I will receive your e-mail and in some cases (though not all!) your name, and that's it. I do keep this information for tax purposes, and also for the purpose of, possibly, contacting you if I create a future collection that I think would be of interest to you.
- DVDs, Ebooks, etc.
- We no longer offer DVD magazine collections, individual downloads of the Victorian magazines we use on the site (almost all our magazines are now available at Archive.org), or direct-download e-books.
As mentioned above, I reserve the right to contact buyers in the unlikely event that I launch a newsletter or blog on the topics addressed by this site. Again, if that were to occur, correspondents have the right to opt out of any future e-mails.
5. If This Site Is Sold or Transferred...
If I ever sell or transfer this website, no personal e-mail addresses, correspondence, or contact information relating to visitors and/or customers will be transferred with the sale except as indicated above.
