Godey's Lady's Book was launched by Louis Godey in 1830; by 1860 it was the most popular periodical in America, with over 150,000 subscribers. Sarah Josepha Hale edited the magazine from 1837 to 1877 and published only American writers. She also, whenever possible, published women writers. Godey's was particularly known as a fashion magazine; its famous fashion plates were hand-tinted. Each issue included a mix of fashion, nonfiction articles, fiction and poetry - as well as features on cooking and needlework. Hale was an admirer of Queen Victoria, and made the magazine a truly "Victorian" publication. Since issues of Godey's can be quite expensive, we only have a few in our collection. Besides the issues we've posted, many additional volumes can be found on Archive.org.
