Harper's New Monthly Magazine (now known as Harper's Magazine or simply Harper's), is the oldest monthly magazine in the U.S. (Technically, The Scientific American is older, but it wasn't actually published as a monthly until 1921.)
The magazine was founded in June 1850 by Harper & Brothers, which also published Harper's Weekly (a news magazine widely known for its Civil War coverage) and Harper's Bazaar (a lady's magazine known for its fashions). The magazine began by publishing (and pirating) works of British authors; over time it has published some of the top names in American fiction and nonfiction.
A typical issue of Harper's features a wide range of articles on current events, history, archaeology, the arts, architecture, politics and more. Like most magazines of the day, it carried a heavy dose of fiction, including short stories and serialized novels.
Harper & Brothers merged with Row, Peterson & Company to become Harper & Row in 1962; it is now HarperCollins. The magazine is now owned by the Cowles Media Company.
Back issues of Harper's are available on the Harper's website - but you have to pay to access them. Besides those issues we have posted, the magazine does not seem to be readily available on the web.
