Gentleman's Magazine 1859
Home > About Our Magazines > Miscellaneous Magazines > Gentleman's Magazine 1859
The Gentleman's Magazine and Historical Review is surely the longest-running publication of our collection: It was founded in 1731 and remained in publication until 1922. It was also the first to use the term "magazine" for a periodical. It was founded by Edward Cave, who edited the magazine under the name "Sylvanus Urban" (a name adopted by subsequent editors). Samuel Johnson's first job as a writer was for this publication. It ran a wide variety of content, including news and obituaries; though it focused on current events it also had a strong emphasis (as the subtitle suggests) on history, folklore and antiquities. For more information, visit Wikipedia; extensive archives can be found at Archive.org.
