It seems almost superfluous to state that Peterson's Magazine was founded (in 1842) to "compete" with Godey's Lady's Book. It was offered as a cheaper magazine ($2 per year instead of $3) - but the two are virtually indistinguishable from one another. They have the same size, format, and roughly the same type of content. Each magazine offered extensive coverage of the latest fashions, with hand-tinted fashion plates - and a Peterson's plate looks pretty much the same as a Godey's plate. (Peterson's began issuing double-page fashion plates in 1866 - a change that, the editor announced, would cost the magazine $20K more per year!) Like Godey's, Peterson's was heavy on fiction and serialized novels, with a small selection of nonfiction articles (including pieces on cooking, embroidery and crafts, and housekeeping). The magazine began as Ladies' National Magazine and became Peterson's in 1848; in 1898 it was purchased by Frank Munsey and combined into the American edition of Argosy Magazine.
A number of volumes of Peterson's are now available on Google Books. So far, besides what we've loaded, only a few can be found on Archive.org.
