St. Nicholas Magazine is a charming American children's magazine, founded in 1873 by Scribner's. In 1881 it was purchased by the publishers of Century Magazine. It was edited by Mary Mapes Dodge until her death in 1905, and published such authors as Mark Twain, Louisa May Alcott, Frances Hodgson Burnett, E.B. White and many other "top names" in children's writing. The magazine is named for jolly old St. Nick - who is after all the "special friend" of children!
While the magazine featured pieces for all ages, its primary content (which included many lavishly illustrated nonfiction articles) was aimed at the well-educated child. Its content was designed for boys and girls, and issues also included pieces specially formatted for younger children (with longer words broken into syllables for easy reading). One of the more interesting features of the magazine was its letters column, which gives the modern reader a rare peek into the lives of Victorian children around the world!
St. Nicholas volumes run from November through October. Volumes were sometimes issued as complete annuals (twelve months), though they consist of "Part 1" and "Part 2". In later years, volumes were generally issued every six months - e.g., Volume 16, Part 1, and Volume 16, Part 2.
St. Nicholas was generally less racist than many other children's magazines of the day, and most of its content is as enjoyable today as it was 100 years ago. The magazine ceased publication in 1940. Many volumes are available on Archive.org, though the ones I've checked thus far open as read-only.
