I hadn't originally intended to include a section on America's Civil War on this site. The theme for VictorianVoices.net is primarily "Victorian life" - and changes in Victorian life. And besides, I thought, there are so many websites on the Civil War - who needs another one? Of course, that did mean leaving out a wealth of articles in my collection from magazines like Century.
Then I discovered that these articles were not, in fact, readily available online. Of course, many of the articles in this section are part of Century Magazine's "Battles and Leaders of the Civil War" series - which eventually became the famous four-volume set of books by the same name. And you can generally find free electronic versions of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War. But... you can't find the articles as they originally appeared in Century Magazine. Plus, Century also frequently ran a number of adjunct pieces - personal accounts, editorials, letters and commentaries - that never became part of Battles and Leaders.
What perhaps swayed me more, however, was recognizing that in terms of creating change in the Victorian world and way of life, few events had so powerful an effect on Victorian America as the Civil War. Much of this site focuses on changes to the role of women in the Victorian era - and the Civil War changed women's roles in America forever. Of course, it changed just about every other aspect of American life as well - with effects that resonate to this day. So really, how could I hope to present a picture of Victorian America without this defining episode?
