Without Britain, there would be no "VictorianVoices.net." This section begins with a look at how Victorian Britain was governed, bringing you articles on the British government, laws, offices and officials, finances, and more. Besides an amazing array of articles, here we bring you lists, tables, charts - primarily courtesy of The Illustrated London Almanack, which brought its readers annual details of the latest legislation, regulations, postal rates, public revenues and expenses, names of government officials, and much more.
Then we take you out into the British countryside, for a tour of Victorian Britain as it appeared to the traveler of the day. Here you'll find articles on the British counties and shires, British towns and cities, specific destinations such as beaches and forests, and sites such as castles, cathedrals, country manors, antiquities and more. You'll see how the Victorian traveler toured Britain, including travel by rail, travel by boat and canoe, travel by bicycle, and even the occasional walking tour. (Interestingly, I don't think we have a single article that features travel by any sort of horse-drawn vehicle!) Note that most of these pages are organized alphabetically by location rather than chronologically by date of publication.
Many of the sites in these pages can be visited today, allowing you to follow in the footsteps of Victorian tourists. Others have vanished forever, or have changed beyond recognition. And today many have been added - what appear in these pages as "homes of British statesmen" or other celebrities of the Victorian era are now often open to the public as stately homes and tourist attractions!
But what about London, the very heart of Victorian Britain? Ah, that has a section all its own!
