As a tourist destination, Ireland had its attractions for the English - but its detractions as well. For England, Ireland was a never-ending source of "troubles" - which, of course, persist to this day. The Irish people were generally regarded with great disdain and prejudice; one can read many articles on the faults of the Irish servant girl, who is universally named "Bridget" by the English writer (just as an Irishman is invariably dubbed "Paddy"). American tourists, on the other hand, found Ireland a charming place to visit - and were perhaps more welcome. This section looks at Irish tourist destinations, Irish history, and Irish life.
