The Victorian lady was the original DIY individual. Her home was decorated by her capable hands; her clothing, if not hand-sewn, was often embellished by her skillful embroidery. But while we fondly imagine the Victorian lady as sitting decorously in her parlor with a basket of needlework, Victorian magazines actually envisioned the Victorian woman as being capable of much more than that. The Girl's Own Paper provides articles on brass repoussee work, wood-carving, gesso work, and many other skills that would prove challenging even to today's liberated woman - a clear indication that Victorian girls weren't universally regarded as delicate, helpless creatures.
This passion for crafts and handiwork is easy to understand when one recalls that this era had no television, no radio, no round-the-clock sources of entertainment. Victorian ladies literally made their own fun. Victorian magazines struggled to keep up with the constant demand for new patterns and projects - and one often sees reprints in American magazines of British designs and articles (with, sadly, no attribution to the original author!). In this section, you'll find a host of patterns and instructions that are sure to inspire your own artistic endeavors!
