If there is one area in our modern lives that is profoundly influenced by the Victorian era, it's Christmas. So many of our holiday traditions stem from the Victorian period. Even though Victorians didn't "invent" the Christmas tree, it was Queen Victoria's love of this tradition that made it popular then - and a part of our lives ever since. But many other present-day traditions are also firmly rooted in our Victorian past. The Valentine card has its origins in the Victorian era, when it first became possible to print such cards inexpensively and in quantity. Easter traditions certainly didn't begin in Victorian days, but Victorians managed to carry Easter eggs (like so many other things) to extremes. In America, Thanksgiving was formalized as an official celebration in 1863 (though the current date wasn't fixed until 1941). Holidays are a time when we celebrate tradition - and much of the tradition we celebrate is Victorian!
