Nearly every Victorian magazine aimed at women included some sort of "household hints" section. In some, like The Girl's Own Paper, this was most often a filler, with a selection of hints inserted wherever something was needed to complete a page at the end of an article. In others, like Godey's, it was a regular column, usually titled something like "Miscellany" or "Hints" or "Domestic Recipes." A "hints" column often ran a combination of recipes and cleaning tips, sometimes offering health tips as well. Most likely, these tips were gathered not only from the editors and regular contributors, but from readers - much like columns in our own century like "Hints from Heloise" and such. [Dear Reader, are you old enough to remember "Hints from Heloise"?] In the columns below, you'll find everything from how to make a pudding to how to make your own toothpaste!
