For many in Victorian Britain, "Victorian life" meant "life in London." By the beginning of the 20th century, about 20% of Britain's population lived in London. The city had already begun swallowing up dozens of (formerly) outlying villages and farmlands, and its population was diverse beyond imagining. London brought together the richest houses with the poorest slums, and was (as today) the home of many different ethnic groups.
This section looks at the various aspects of Victorian London, from its street markets and child laborers to its most famous sites and landmarks. It offers views of London from the perspective of those who lived there, and from those who visited and brought their impressions back home. For the would-be Victorian tourist, it brings you a look at the historic sites that drew visitors from around the world (just as those same sites do today!). It also offers a glimpse of London's Victorian museums, shops, parks, and even a look at its famous "Zoological Garden" (better known as the London Zoo).
