In the days before you could look up anything on the Internet, a popular way to keep important information ready to hand was the "Almanack." Many different companies produced annual almanacks on different topics, such as almanacks for farmers, for sailors, or for sportsmen. Almanacks were issued annually and often included seasonal nature articles, which might focus on the type of flora and/or fauna that could be observed (or utilized) in a particular month or season. Magazines also frequently ran monthly or seasonal series covering nature, outdoor sports, gardening - and often a combination of all of the above.
