There would, of course, be no "Victorian era" if there hadn't been a Queen Victoria! Until very recently, Queen Victoria held the record for the longest reign in Britain. (The record is now held by Queen Elizabeth II.) The Victorian period was perhaps the first historical "period" to have been referred to by name while it was in process; Victorians themselves spoke of their era, and of themselves, as being "Victorian." And such was the influence of this era in Britain that even America, staunchly unroyalist as it may have been, considers this period of its history (and especially its architecture, designs and fashions) to be at least to some degree "Victorian."
Queen Victoria seems to have captured the hearts of her people in a way that few, if any, British monarchs have done before or since. Today, the epoch that bears her name continues to fascinate us. Victoriana and Victorian design keep cycling between "antiquated" and "trendy." (One can only hope that this site will manage to remain in the "trendy" category.) We yearn to live in a Victorian-style home; when traveling we look for Victorian B&Bs, Victorian tea-shops. And we do still love those fashions - except for those pesky corsets...
Of course, Victoria wasn't the only monarch of the Victorian age. This section looks first at the life of the Queen and her family, then at such topics as the royal family's possessions, pets, homes and hobbies. We then move on to look at other royals around the world - the rulers of Europe, and of more distant and exotic regions. Finally, this section looks at historic royalty, both in Britain and around the world.
