Victorian women's magazines often offered their British and American readers features on how women in other parts of the world lived, worked, and studied. Quite often, such articles focused on how different such women's lives were - how quaint and curious, if not downright uncivilized and oppressive. Bear in mind as you review this section that most writers of this period regarded non-Anglos (including Europeans) as inferior and "different from us." You'll also notice that many articles have words like "girl" or "girl-life" in the title. This doesn't mean these pieces are actually about children! While some do cover children as well as adults, this is simply an example of the use of the word "girl" to mean a female of any age - a usage that didn't really get knocked on its head until the late 20th century! (Articles on children around the world can be found in the International and Children's sections.)
