The Victorian World:
Japanese Art & Literature

Home > The Victorian World > The Far East > Japanese Art & Literature
The number of articles to be found on the arts of Japan is surely a reflection of the Victorian craze for oriental-themed furnishings - particularly in the Japanese style. An entire furniture industry arose in the West to create furniture that appeared Japanese. Household craft articles explained how to make one's own "japanned" wares and Japanese-style furnishings. It's possible that the lighter styles of Japan, including furniture made of bamboo and light-weight enameled pieces, were a welcome contrast to the heavy wooden furnishings of earlier days. Here's a look at the art and artifacts of Japan.

The Corean Origin of Japanese Art, by William Elliot Griffis (Century Magazine, 1883A)

Wherein Japanese Art is Superior (Peterson's, 1883)

How the Japanese Arrange Flowers for Decoration, by Helen Zimmern (Girl's Own Paper, 1892)

Contemporary Japanese Art, by Ernest Francisco Fenollosa (Century Magazine, 1893B)
Examples of Japanese art from the Chicago World's Fair, with some history about the state of Japanese art following the western "craze" for oriental design.

Of the Eternal Feminine, by Lafcadio Hearn (Atlantic Monthly, 1893)
Art, culture and beauty in Japan.

The Japanese Fan, by Nancy Gleeson White (Girl's Own Paper, 1894)

The Armor of Old Japan, by M.S. Hunter (Century Magazine, 1895A)

A Japanese Life of General Grant (Century Magazine, 1895B)
A rare find in Tokyo: a set of books in Japanese depicting the life of General Grant, with many woodcuts.

Japanese War Posters, by D.P.B. Conkling (Century Magazine, 1896A)
Propaganda posters relating to the war between Japan and China.

An Outline of Japanese Art, by Ernest F. Fenollosa (Century Magazine, 1898B)

Japanese Botany (Strand, 1901A)
Some Japanese botanical prints.

The Japanese Jack the Giant Killer, by Leonard Larkin (Strand, 1901B)
The ancient Japanese tale of a knight tasked to destroy an ogre.

A Queer Guidebook, by Leonard Larkin (Strand, 1901B)
