The Victorian World:
Morocco, Algeria & Tunis

Home > The Victorian World > The Middle East >Morocco, Algeria & Tunis

Only the most intrepid Victorian travelers ventured into the Arab lands around the Mediterranean. Of those countries, Morocco and "Algiers" (Algeria) had the most romantic reputation amongst Europeans. Travel to such countries involved a far more significant amount of "roughing it" (or "going native") than most Victorians cared for, so such journeys definitely had the quality of an adventure. This section looks at travel, life and culture in Morocco, Algeria and Tunis (which includes the ancient city of Carthage).
