Again, there is a very similar epitaph to be found in Bidstone Churchyard,
where there is a small sandstone obelisk erected to the memory of a young
woman named Martha Clark, nee Owen. After giving the name and age,
the epitaph concludes:—
Nineteen years a maid,
Two years a wife,
Nine days a mother,
And then departed life.
267. On Lord Byron.
The following epitaphian inscription is on Lord Byron’s monument, which
is an elegant Grecian tablet of white marble, placed in the chancel of
Hucknal church. The words are in Roman capitals, and divided into lines
as under:—
In the vault beneath,
where many of his ancestors and his
mother are buried,
lie the remains of
George Gordon Noel Byron,
Lord Byron of Rochdale,
in the county of Lancaster:
The author of “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage.”
He was born in London, on the

22 of January, 1788;
He died at Missolonghi, in Western
Greece, on the

19 April, 1824,
Engaged in the glorious attempt to
restore that country to her ancient
freedom and renown.
His sister, the Honourable
Augusta Maria Leigh,
placed this tablet to his memory.
